Rias Baixas

The Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin includes different areas in the west region of Galicia with common physical conditions that produce a consistently high quality of wines.

They are mostly flat lands, with an average height of 300 meters, close to the sea and usually crossed by the lower course of different rivers. Therefore the weather conditions are of Atlantic nature, in other words, mild temperatures and heavy and adequately distributed rainfalls, although the weather tends to get drier during the summer season.

These weather conditions together with the soil morphology - poor, acid, sandy and thin - convey the grapes and produce wines that are protected under this Denomination of Origin with a very peculiar aroma and freshness.

Grapes and Winemaking

The following varieties are grapes exclusively used in the Rias Baixas Denomination of Origin:

  • Whites: Albariño, Loureira blanca or Marqués, Treixadura and Caíño blanco
  • Reds: Caíño tinto, Espadeiro, Loureira tinta and Sousón

Bodegas La Val

The winery owns 90 hectares of noble native varietals located along the Miño River which is a privileged viticultural area in terms of climate and soil. In this area, the grapes reach a perfect balance in sugars and acidity. This subzone within the D.O. Rias Baixas is known as Rosal, where all the best wines of this D.O. come from.

After a careful selection, the grapes are carried in small containers to the winery where they are crushed and gently pressed by pneumatic presses. Slowly the must runs from the presses and ferments slowly in a temperature controlled environment. This first raw must will be the basis of their Albariño La Val and El Rosal Viña Ludy. The marc obtained from the presses is then distilled in their copper stills to produce the two La Val brandies – a white and a herb.
