Ribera del Duero

The winemaking region of Ribera del Duero, on Spain`s northern plateau, follows the river Duero and takes advantage of a unique climate and land combine to produce outstanding wines.

Four of the provinces of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León come together in the Ribera del Duero: Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid.

Grapes and Winemaking

Most of the Ribera wines are Red wines produced by the grape variety of “Tinta del país” or “Tinto Fino” most known as Tempranillo. The wines are produced under the Regulations of Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.

Bodegas Ismael Arroyo

Bodegas Ismael Arroyo Bodegas Ismael Arroyo is located in Sotillo de la Ribera, in the region of Burgos. It is a picturesque valley in the north east of the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero.

Their wine making tradition has been transmitted from one generation to another, 400 years ago. In fact, there exists some documents proving that Elpidio Arroyo (father and grandfather of today’s generation) won an award in 1948 in the “Gran Concurso de Vinos Tintos y Claretes de la Ribera del Duero”. This was a competition of Red and Rosé Wines of Ribera del Duero. Moreover, the cellar has some other important documents like a Diploma of 1st Class given to the wine in 1902. Additionally, there is a notebook where which has records of the diezmos or taxes that people paid for the wine in 1787.

Ismael Arroyo has an underground cellar dating to the 16th century, which takes about 2,000 square meters of galleries, carved into the rocky soil, where the temperature is around 12°C (54F) the whole year, and where they have their bottle and barrel cellar.

While their history goes back almost five centuries, the Bodega only began bottling wine since 1979. They have been pioneers and founders of the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Duero.
